Xena frees a band of convicts in order to battle the warlord Agathon, a protégé of Ares who possesses weapons made of super-hard metal.
Six thousand Athenians are slaughtered by Agathon (Jonathon Roberts) and his soldiers, who have been given the metal of Hephaistos by Ares (Kevin Smith) to construct super-strong weapons. Xena gathers together a band of hardened criminals, personally trainded by herself during her evil past, to go up against Agathon and Ares.
Although Xena’s crew help her to break into the castle containing the armoury, two of the men sell out to Agathon. Xena, Gabrielle, and Glaphyra (Katrina Hobbs) are imprisoned. But Darnelle (Charles Mesure), one of Xena’s allies, has been working with her all along and provides her with the tools to break free. Since she’s already inside the armoury, it’s much easier for her to kill Agathon with one of his own weapons and destroy the entire castle.
This episode gave us more insights into Xena’s past seeing the type of people she used to roll with. The Dirty Half Dozen title seems to be a nod to the Dirty Dozen war movie.
When Agathon tells Ares that everyone knows that when it comes to Xena, Ares thinks with his lower instincts, I really wanted Ares to pop him one. What a scuzz bucket. I was so glad when he met his end with his own weapon.
The castle explosion was one of the best parts of this episode.
