Protecting your blog content from theft and other legal stuff

Copright and protecting your blog My mind has been a free spirit this week and I can’t tie it down to any one task. That’s not a bad thing though because whilst it’s off wondering and dipping its toes in the sea, I tend to learn a lot. I don’t’ actually get much done but sometimes it has to be all about the knowledge. This is my go to prevarication excuse.

So I spent the morning reading other bloggers who are taking part in the #31WriteNow challenge. I figure I can learn a lot from more seasoned bloggers and even newbies have nuggets, good times. My intention was to get through a lot of posts but I followed the link to From Rae with Love’s Pinterest (because you can never follow enough people on Pinterest) and ended up following a link to a post about Legal Stuff for Bloggers.

Now, I’ve had a Cookie Policy since the EU Cookie law debacle and stuck a copyright in my footer as standard but there were other things to consider that I didn’t know about, so I started considering.  The Legal Stuff post talks about Terms of Service for your blog and the use of a disclosure policy if you make money from your blog and stuff like that.  I started looking around to see if other bloggers had implemented any of the legal stuff. Some definitely had. I found privacy policies, terms of use and disclaimer pages all over.

Then I read Luvvie’s post How to Protect Your Blog Content: Know Your Rights and I went off to generate disclaimers, disclosure notices, copyright notices and terms of use text to stick on my blog. I can’t imagine anyone nicking my random thoughts but you never know. The way my site has been hammered by bots there’s nothing to say my content isn’t being scraped, better safe than sorry.

So it’s been an interesting morning, I did plan to spend it chilling but I’ve learnt some things and implemented some things and I have something to blog about to meet today’s  #31WriteNow challenge, so all in all it’s been time well spent.
