Sony in talks to bring God of War to Amazon Prime

8 March, 2022 by Devon Skyler
God of War

God of War, the wildly popular action-adventure franchise from Sony, is reportedly heading to TV. Prime Video is in negotiations to develop a live-action series based on the ancient mythology-themed game. This is especially good news as God of War was on my list of games I’d like to see turned into movies.

The television series adaptation is expected to be led by The Expanse creators/executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, The Wheel of Time executive producer/showrunner Rafe Judkins, and Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions, who collaborate on all TV series based on PlayStation games.

Children of Men co-writers Fergus and Ostby were nominated for Oscar for the action thriller, and they co-wrote the script for Iron Man, which kicked off Marvel Studios’ box-office reign. Judkins is also a Marvel aficionado as he was a writer-producer on ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

With pedigrees like these guys, I’m sure Amazon will do an amazing job of adapting this film for television.

Video games coming to your TV screens

A TV series based on a popular video game title is a big deal in a very competitive streaming market and there are several already in the works.  HBO is bringing the high-profile PlayStation game-based series The Last of Us to its viewers, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. A Resident Evil TV series is in the works for Netflix, and Halo is about to debut on Paramount+. And Peacock has just landed another SPT/PlayStation property, Twisted Metal, with a series order starring Anthony Mackie.

When it comes to adapting popular games, Amazon Studios is a particularly aggressive player. The studio has the upcoming TV drama Fallout from Killer Films, starring Walton Goggins; it is adapting the Mass Effect series and just closed a deal with dj2 Entertainment to develop TV series based on gaming IP.

God of War game series

The God of War action game franchise launched in 2005 on the PlayStation 2, with the first God of War and now spans a total of seven games across four PlayStation consoles. At the centre is ex-Spartan warrior Kratos and his perilous journey to exact revenge on Ares, the Greek God of War, after killing his loved ones under the deity’s influence. After becoming the ruthless God of War himself, Kratos finds himself constantly looking for a chance to change his fate.

After a number of titles on various PlayStation consoles, including the PS3 and PSP, Santa Monica Studio breathed new life into the franchise with the 2018 PlayStation 4 game. With his son Atreus, Kratos gets a second chance at fatherhood in the Norse wilds. The game won a plethora of awards at the 2018 Game Awards, including Game of the Year.

The eighth God of War instalment, God of War: Ragnorok, is in the works for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 and is set to drop this year.

Are you looking forward to seeing God of War on your TV screens? Let us know in the comments.
