Star Trek fans were delighted by the news that the original cast members of Star Trek: The Next Generation will reunite with Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: Picard Season 3.
TNG actors who will feature in the next season of Picard are Jonathan Frakes (Will Riker), LeVar Burton (Geordi La Forge), Brent Spiner (Data), Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi), Michael Dorn (Worf) and Gates McFadden (Dr Beverly Crusher).
Wil Wheaton, who played Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: TNG, was conspicuously missing from the list. Fans have been upset that Wil will not reprise the role of Wesley Crusher with his old castmates. When the series was on the air, many fans didn’t like the character, calling him a Mary Sue and criticising the fact that “the child” saved the ship and crew on occasion.
Wheaton addressed his absence from Star Trek: Picard Season 3 on his blog, stating that “I share some of your sadness, for my own reasons, but I choose to focus instead on how special it’s going to be to see my family back together again, and how wonderful it’s going to be to talk with them about it in the Ready Room.”
In the blog post, Will wrote a little fan fiction about how Traveller Wesley would feature in the show.
He doesn’t seem to know why the makers of Star Trek: Picard didn’t bring him back for Season 3. He’s still very much attached to the franchise; as Wheaton mentioned, he hosts The Ready Room, a Star Trek TV aftershow that streams on Facebook Live, IGTV, YouTube, and Paramount+.
Wheaton often sits down with stars and creators for behind-the-scenes interviews about Star Trek TV in the aftershow. It is possible that hosting The Ready Room is why he hasn’t been invited to join the cast of Picard. After all, it would be a little strange to have an actor who knows all the show’s secrets also trying to conduct interviews about it.
