Season 1, episode 13
Still recovering from the incidents of last week’s episode Divided, this week’s episode, Faith sees Colonel Young and the other military personnel trying to find a way to live with the civilians who tried to take control of the ship.
Just to confirm my thoughts last week that the writers of Stargate Universe are walking in the shoes of Battlestar Galactica, this week there was talk of the hand of god, god having a plan, fate and all that stuff.
Maybe BSG is still too fresh in my mind and I’m seeing copied storylines where there aren’t any, or maybe I’m right. Anyway to recap vaguely:
Following the failed civilian coup, Young and his peeps are trying to forgive or at least learn to live with the pesky civilians.
Due to a computer malfunction, Destiny prematurely comes out of hyperspace near a planet similar to Earth. The planet shouldn’t be there and Rush concludes that the entire system was created by a far superior alien race.
The ship is malfunctioning all over the place and repairs are going to take ages. It will be a month before Destiny can jump again so some of the military and civilians decide to chill on the planet.
When it’s time to leave some decide they want to stay including CJ who reveals to Chloe she is pregnant with Young’s baby. She wants a good life for her kid, which is understandable but she’s military and she’s the only one with above-average medical skills.
Colonel Young has to remind the military personal that they signed up for the long haul and commands them to get their arses back on the Destiny. However, the civilians believe that they were meant to find the planet. They are spouting biblical text and talking about faith and whatnot so Young is cool with them staying.
Will we see these civilians again? Do we care? I’m happy to see the civvy population dwindle. Maybe now Young can find a way to come up with a more balanced strategy to incorporate the civilians into day to day operations. As long as the military and civilians remain divided it might lend to good storytelling but it makes me not care about the civilians.
Flashforward fan
With an episode title like Faith it was bound to be god related don’t you think? But, I agree with the BSG references. Give it time, the show is going to come into its own.
