Matt Bomer says gay characters have evolved

Matt Bomer stars in the new movie Papi Chulo as a gay weatherman down on his luck who makes an unexpected friend during this difficult time.

Bomer plays Sean, the newly-single TV weatherman placed on leave following an on-air meltdown. He decides to direct his energy into home improvement and hires a middle-aged Latino day labourer named Ernesto to help. Despite a language barrier and having nothing in common, the two men develop an unexpected but profound friendship.

Since White Collar ended, the openly gay actor has starred in several LGBTQ roles in theatre, television and films – including Boys in the Band, Will’s fiancé on Will & Grace, DCs Doom Patrol, where he plays superhero Larry Trainor (a.k.a. Negative Man) and now Papi Chulo.

Matt Bomer came out when he was honoured at the Desert AIDS Project’s Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards in 2012. Bomer received the New Generation Arts and Activism award while creating The Normal Heart, and he used the opportunity to thank his family and acknowledge his husband.

“I’d really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry,” Bomer said, shouting out his husband and their three children. “Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment.”

In an interview with Variety, Bomer said that gay characters have evolved over time, and people are now writing three-dimensional gay characters.

“They’re not just the sassy stylist or the friend with a lot of attitude or the guys who are going to help the straight guy pull it together,” he said. “There’s really nothing wrong with those things, but they did become tropes over the years and oftentimes were the only dimension that the character had to bring to the table, so I did always pass on those opportunities.”

Papi Chulo opens in select theatres in New York and Los Angeles on 7 June and will be available nationwide on 14 June.
