Marvel is developing a Nova project with Moon Knight writer Sabir Pirzada, according to Deadline.
It’s unknown whether this will be developed as a feature film or a limited series for Disney+. However, a Nova project seemed inevitable ever since Guardians of the Galaxy introduced the Nova Corps and expanded the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Comic debut
Writer Marv Wolman and artist John Romita Sr created Nova. The character debuted in The Man Called Nova #1 in 1976 and has featured in major Marvel Comics events, including Annihilation and Secret Invasion. For decades, Nova, specifically Richard Rider, has been one of Marvel’s most popular characters.
Who is Nova?
Richard Rider is a high-school student in New York who gains the powers and uniform of the Nova Corps from a dying alien named Rhomann Dey. At first, Rider becomes a superhero on Earth but eventually travels into space and to Xandar.
Nova’s powers are flight and enhanced strength, and he can also absorb energy and release it in pulses and beams.
He didn’t have many encounters with many of the main characters of the current or past MCU but did fight the Skrulls. They play a significant role in some recent and upcoming Marvel projects, including Captain Marvel and the limited series Secret Invasion.
Nova Corps first appeared in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, with Glenn Close portraying Nova Prime, John C Reilly playing Rhomann Dey and Peter Serafinowicz playing Garthan Saal. The movie depicted the Nova Corps as ordinary, blue-collar space cops rather than super-powered heroes. Their power was shown as coming from their spaceships rather than the Nova Force itself.
It is implied that Thanos decimated the Nova Corps and their homeworld of Xandar in Avengers: Infinity War.
I’m looking forward to seeing how the Tale of Nova translates to the screen.
