As Doctor Who’s monumental 60th Anniversary Special approaches, fans worldwide are eagerly anticipating the celebrations and potential return of their favourite Doctors. Recently, Peter Capaldi, who portrayed the Twelfth Doctor, spoke to SFX Magazine about his thoughts on a possible return for the special occasion.
While incoming showrunner Russell T Davies confirmed that David Tennant would be taking part in next year’s festivities along with new Doctor actor Ncuti Gatwa, Capaldi has expressed some reservations about multi-Doctor episodes. The Twelfth Doctor stated, “It’s very hard to imagine how you’d get a decent crack of the whip when there’s 14 of you, you know? So I think I’d rather leave it as is because I loved my time on Doctor Who and loved doing it.”
Although some fans might be disappointed by these comments, Capaldi has experience with appearing in multi-Doctor stories. He had a brief appearance in the 50th Anniversary special and shared an episode with the First Doctor in his own final farewell.
Interestingly, not all previous Doctors share Capaldi’s sentiment. Matt Smith, who played the Eleventh Doctor before Capaldi, recently mentioned that “no one’s picked up the phone” to ask for his return but wouldn’t rule it out entirely.
The road to the 60th Anniversary features many exciting events for Whovians worldwide. Jodie Whittaker, the Thirteenth Doctor, will exit her role during the BBC centenary special ‘The Power of the Doctor’, accompanied by returning companions Tegan and Ace, The Master, Daleks, Cybermen and – without a doubt – a plethora of surprises.
Doctor Who’s 60th Anniversary promises to be a celebration filled with nostalgia, excitement, and emotional farewells. Regardless of whether Capaldi makes an appearance, the iconic series will continue to capture the hearts of fans across time and space.
