Netflix is milking Squid Game for all it is worth. Not satisfied with their big hit show’s upcoming second series, they are turning the dystopian Korean drama series into a reality TV show.
The new reality series will see 456 players compete for a $4.56M cash prize – the largest cash prize for a reality series. I’m sure they won’t be killed off in their quest for such a considerable fortune and that people who like reality TV shows will find it entertaining.
The contestants will compete in a series of games inspired by the show and some new ones. Their alliances, strategies, and character will be tested as fellow competitors are eliminated.
In the first season of the scripted series, we see an unwitting group of cash-strapped individuals being given a chance to play Korean children’s games to win a large cash prize, unaware that the stakes are deadly.
The game’s creators take advantage of the broke and desperate contestants, using money to coerce people to continue playing even after learning the consequences of losing. The nine-part series focuses on the effects of capitalism and the cruel realities leading to South Korea having one of the highest suicide rates in the world.
Brandon Riegg, VP of Unscripted and Documentary Series at Netflix, said: “Squid Game took the world by storm with Director Hwang’s captivating story and iconic imagery. We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment. Fans of the drama series are in for a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real world contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever, full of tension and twists, with the biggest ever cash prize at the end.”
As someone who hates reality TV shows, it should come as no surprise that I think this is a tacky move on the part of Netflix.
This proposed reality show goes against the theme of the scripted series. Squid Game is a critique of modern-day capitalism, and now this streaming giant unironically has decided to have people compete in similar games for life-changing cash.
