The purpose of mucus

Mucus has a purpose

The purpose of mucusSo I’m into week three of this flu/cold/virus thingy. I went to the doctor who told me that I had nothing to worry about. If it’s not cleared up within the next three weeks then I should worry. WTF! I don’t expect to have a cold for more than two weeks max.

The last time I had a virus this long it turned into pneumonia. Aside from the drugs to make me comfortable (apparently there isn’t anything that can clear it up – it has to run it’s course), he did answer an age old question.

Phlegm- what the heck is it’s purpose?

Apparently, the lungs produce phlegm as a barrier to protect themselves from infection. So until my flu/cold/virus thingy goes my old lungs will be churning out the mucus in defence. Not so disgusting now that I know it’s purpose.
