It’s been confirmed that Michelle Yeoh will continue her adventures as Captain Philippa Georgiou in a spinoff series focussed on Starfleet’s Section 31 division.
The semi-secret and autonomous organisation has been a part of Trek lore since it was first introduced in the 1990s on the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine series and will feature in season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery.
According to Deadline, the new addition to the franchise from co-executive producers Erika Lippoldt and Bo Yeon Kim is shaping up to be an ensemble.
Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman said in a statement: “Michelle has shattered ceilings, broken boundaries, and astonished us with her grace and gravitas for decades. As a human, I adore her. As an actor, I revere her.”
He added. “Erika and Boey are remarkable, exciting writers who bring a fresh perspective to the world of Star Trek, and we’re all thrilled to explore the next wild chapter in the life of Captain Philippa Georgiou.”
Michelle Yeoh said: “I’m so excited to continue telling these rich ‘Star Trek’ stories. Being a part of this Universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly, I believe it will go ‘where no WOMAN has ever gone before!’”
Speaking to the media at the January Television Critics Association Press Tour, Kurtzman revealed that they’re “breaking story” on the Georgiou series now.
“Our hope is that we will have a script in the next couple months and then as soon as Discovery season three is over, we’re rolling right into that show,” he added. “That’s the hope.”
He also disclosed that the reason they thought a spin-off was such a good idea will become clear after watching season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery, teasing that the evolution of Section 31 is the thing to look out for.
“If you know Section 31, you know that by the time Deep Space 9 comes around they’ve gone underground and they are this mysterious organisation – but there’s nothing official about it,” he said.
“In the promos [for season 2] that you’ve seen so far, Section 31 has a badge. There’s a ship and all these different things, so the question is: how do they get from here to there?
“What happened in that window of time between those two pivot points in Section 31’s evolution?”
And as for how all these shows are going to link together, Kurtzman promised that they’ll only do so “peripherally”, saying that it’s important to them that “each show offers a unique perspective”.
“[It’s important] that it doesn’t feel like you’re getting the same thing from each show,” he said. “In that sense, each show has its own identity.”
