What is dead may never die. So say the Iron Born. It seems HBO is taking the Game of Thrones Iron Islands saying to heart as it prepares to launch another GoT sequel series.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the next series will feature the know-nothing former bastard, Jon Snow, with Kit Harrington attached to reprise the role. The project I doubt anyone asked for is still in the exploratory stages.
As revealed in GoT’s eighth and final season, Jon Snow discovers his real name is Aegon Targaryen, a potential heir to the Iron Throne, a revelation that turns his aunty/lover mad. In the series finale, Jon was exiled from Westeros and travelled north of the Wall with the Wildlings.
If the proposed sequel series gets off the ground, it will chronicle the post-Westeros story of Jon Snow. The project would be the first spin-off and sequel to HBO’s mega-hit fantasy drama. No doubt the Wildings will also feature, and who knows, maybe Ghost will be treated better in this series.
I don’t lack imagination and can regard this tale as one worth telling, but there is still the bitter taste of Game of Thrones plot holes in the air. True, Jon Snow is a popular character, but I still have memories of screaming at the TV every time he denounced the throne. I’m not ready to see him romping around with Wildings, to be honest.
Over the past several years, HBO has focused on Game of Thrones prequels. The first series to come to fruition is House of the Dragon, which is set to premiere on 21 August.
Now, this is a series I am looking forward to. It tells the story of the end of House Targaryen and the lead-up to the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. I’m embracing this show as a GoT palate cleanser.
Other series in the works include Dunk and Egg, The Sea Snake, 10,000 Ships and 9 Voyages.
