BBC premiered the first trailer for the Doctor Who Centenary special at the end of Legend of the Sea Devils, and it appears there will be an epic battle.
In the voiceover, the Doctor says, “Nothing is forever. No regeneration. No life. Beware of the forces that mass against you and their Master.”
Watch the trailer below:
Who will appear in the centenary special?
Yaz (Mandip Gill) and Dan (John Bishop) will be joining Jodie Whitaker on her final adventure alongside some other familiar faces.
Two familiar characters will make appearances in the special: Vinder (Jacob Anderson) and Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave), who last appeared in the Doctor Who Flux series last year.
Did someone ask for classic companions? Ask, and you shall receive as you can see from the trailer that Ace (Sophie Aldred) and Tegan Jovanka (Janet Fielding) will return for the final special.
“They’ll be helping the Doctor fight on three fronts, against her deadliest enemies: the Master, Daleks and Cybermen, in one huge story,” showrunner Chris Chibnall, who is also departing after this episode, said.
Sacha Dhawan will appear as The Master in Jodie Whittaker’s last episode for one final showdown. This was hinted at in the season 13 finale and confirmed in the trailer of the Centenary special.
Hopefully, this special episode will conclude Jodie Whittaker’s Division/Timeless Child storyline so we can wipe it from our memories. Or even better, now that they have opened that can of worms let’s see where the Doctor came from, visit their homeworld and find out what her people are like.
Bradley Walsh may also appear in the special. The actor was spotted near the show’s filming in 2021, leading to speculation that he may make a cameo appearance as Graham O’Brien.
As well as the Master, we will also get the return of the usual suspects in the form of the Daleks and Cybermen. The trailer teases at the possibility that they might be teaming up to take down the Doctor and her companions.
The plot synopsis released in November 2021 doesn’t give us much insight into what to expect in the final episode. It reads:
“Having faced many perilous journeys battling some of the most feared monsters throughout space and time, it’s the final instalment for the Thirteenth Doctor.
This epic blockbuster special will see the Doctor fight evil across the galaxy one last time, but who will she come up against in her final battle before the Doctor regenerates once more….”
Doctor Who executive producer Matt Strevens told Doctor Who Magazine that the final story is a “massive, feature-length epic with lots of surprises for fans of all ages. Jodie gets a really good send-off. I think it will push everybody’s buttons.”
“And the fact the BBC asked us for it to be part of their Centenary celebrations – I think that just underlines the iconic nature of the show.”
Who will be the Fourteenth Doctor?
As is the norm when the Doctor is about to regenerate, there has been speculation about who will take the mantle. Fan speculation for the role includes Hugh Grant, who doesn’t seem interested in running for the role. Other fan favourites are Olly Alexander, Lydia West, Fisayo Akinade, T’Nia Miller, and Omari Douglas.
Hopefully, the BBC will stay true to form and announce the new Time Lord before the special is due to air. Or they could leave us in the dark and not announce the new Doctor at all, not show us who the Thirteenth Doctor regenerates into in the Centenary special and leave us hanging until the new series. That would be a bold move, but it would probably anger many fans.
