There’s a rumour doing the rounds in the world of Doctor Who that David Tenant will return after Jodie Whittaker regenerates at the end of her run. According to this rumour, Tennant will return as a different incarnation of the Doctor.
There have been rumours about Tennant’s return for several months, particularly on certain Doctor Who reddits and the fan message board Gallifreybase. The story gained new attention after being posted on a fan page for David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor, inspiring discussion on Twitter, mainstream news sources, and even Good Morning Britain.
The idea is that David Tennant would return as a new incarnation in much the same way as Tom Baker did as The Curator in the 2013 anniversary special. This would be for a limited number of specials followed by casting a new 15th Doctor for a new season later.
There is no official announcement from the BBC that David Tennant is back, and it’s pretty embarrassing that the story got as far as national TV. The basis of the rumours is an anonymous post on a Doctor Who Facebook page that said someone who had previously told them something correct also said this was happening.
Sometimes when uncle Tom’s friend who works down the chip shop is told by Lisa down at the dry cleaners that this thing will happen, the rumour can be accurate, but I doubt it in this case.
Also, last year, there were whispers that Tennant may return for a standalone story in 2023, albeit as the original Tenth Doctor (as he appeared in the 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor) rather than some new version.
There are plenty of these kinds of rumours that don’t pan out. Perhaps these were ideas that never came to fruition, or they were never considered. Doctor Who has been known to spread false rumours to confuse fans, distract them from real surprises, and make things exciting.
