The Sandman by Neil Gaiman has been picked up for a second season by Netflix.
According to Deadline, Netflix is bringing back the comic book adaptation after various conflicting reports surfaced online.
The renewal announcement followed an accidental leak from DC Comics’ official Twitter account on Wednesday. In the now-deleted tweet, it read, “The dream continues. [The Sandman] will return with new episodes based on multiple volumes of the Neil Gaiman graphic novel to explore even more stories of the Endless.
As Netflix announced renewals of many of its other shows, fans on Twitter started calling for them to #RenewSandman. As cancellation rumours started circulating, Gaiman called out a fake Twitter account.
Series background
Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), the personification of dreams and one of the seven Endless, is captured in an occult ritual in 1916 in this 10-episode series based on Gaiman’s DC Comics series of the same name. He escapes captivity after 106 years and sets out to restore order to his realm, the Dreaming.
This series was an immediate hit with fans thanks to stellar performances from its cast. Stars included Kyo Ra/Vanesu Samunyai as Rose Walker, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Boyd Holbrook as the Corinthian, and Patton Oswalt as Matthew, the Raven. Other noteworthy cast members included Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer Morningstar, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, David Thewlis as John Dee, and Mason Alexander Park as Desire.
During its first week of airing, The Sandman was viewed for 69.5 million hours; in its second week, that figure increased to 127.5 million hours; in its third week, it scored 77.2 million hours; and in its fourth week, it reported 53.8 million hours.
Neil Gaiman’s graphic novels “A Dream of a Thousand Cats” and “Calliope” were featured in a surprise bonus episode released in August. There were guest appearances included Sandra Oh, James McAvoy, David Tennant, Melissanthi Mahut and Arthur Darvill.
Lucifer is waiting
Netflix describes the upcoming instalment as a continuation of The Sandman world that will get expanded in the next season. Details about the story and episode count are still being kept under wraps.

There are some astonishing stories waiting for Morpheus and the rest of them (not to mention more members of the Endless Family to meet). Nobody is going to be happier about this than the Sandman cast and crew: they are the biggest Sandman fans there are. And now, it’s time to get back to work. There’s a family meal ahead, after all. And Lucifer is waiting for Morpheus to return to Hell…”
