Facebook users discovered they were locked out of their accounts without any explanation. Users are angry as they have not committed any violations.
Many received the message: “Your Facebook account was disabled because it did not follow our Community Standards. This decision can’t be reversed.”
Facebook’s parent company Meta said it was investigating.
Meta’s Andy Stone said in a tweet: “We’re aware that some users are experiencing issues accessing their Facebook accounts and we are working to resolve them as quickly as possible.”
He did not say how many were affected or what the issue was.
One user said: “Facebook ISSUES? I have been sat here in tears feeling like I’ve been hacked or attacked, wondering if I’ll ever get back photos of my son as a baby, knowing that the originals are long lost and feeling so heartbroken. How are you resolving this??”
Stone later conveyed that the issues had been resolved, saying: “Earlier today, a technical issue caused a small number of people to have trouble accessing Facebook. We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”
Ongoing issues
For some users, this is a new occurrence. For others, being locked out of a Facebook account for no reason is an ongoing issue. It’s possible that users failed to heed Meta’s warning about securing their accounts. Or the lockout could be part of constant glitches.
One user tweeted: This isn’t the first time. Facebook accounts get disabled for no reason in waves. Mine happened back in October, and I still don’t have it back. There was another one in December. Don’t rely on Facebook to store your memories, you could lose it all in an instant.
Another user was concerned about her father’s account, saying: “Really hoping that you can help. This happened to my Father a couple of weeks ago, and we are desperate to get his account back. He has stage 4 cancer and uses the account to update his friends on his progress and speak to Macmillan.”
“We have tried numerous ways of contacting Meta with no joy. Any help would be hugely appreciated in a very stressful time.”
This tweet summed things up nicely: “This “incident” has really shown up the contempt that Facebook show it’s users…
Just because we don’t PAY to use the service doesn’t mean you get to treat us like shit! Without us, your company is completely worthless, you need to think long and hard about that!”
