Facebook users must secure their accounts or risk being locked out

18 March, 2022 by PashaO

Facebook users who don’t turn on the new security programme Facebook Protect may be locked out of their accounts.

Users may be getting emails from Meta, the company behind the social media platform, asking them to enable Facebook Protect. If you are invited to activate the new level of security and don’t do it by the date set, you will be frozen out of your account.

The security programme offers further security protections, such as two-factor authentication and monitoring for potential hacking threats.

Facebook Protect was initially created to help political candidates and campaigns stay safe from hacking and misinformation but will now be rolled out to the broader Facebook community.

Facebook Protect will verify login attempts through phones or other devices. It also allows for easier monitoring of hack attempts.

The email tells users that their accounts require “advanced security”.

It says: “Your account has the potential to reach a lot more people than an average Facebook user. Hackers are often motivated to attack accounts that have many followers, run important Pages, or hold some community significance.”

How to turn on Facebook Protect

Users are warned that if they don’t turn on Facebook Protect for their accounts, they will be locked out of Facebook until they enable it.

Users may suspect the email from Meta is a phishing scam, but Meta has assured users that the emails are genuine. If in doubt, do not click the link in the email but log in to your Facebook account directly on the web or on the app.

Go to Settings > Security and Login > Facebook Protect is off on the web.

The app will check through your account for any vulnerabilities and then give you the option to activate an authentication method.
