Since the early days of television, gay characters and themes have been present in some form or another. In many cases, these characters were used as comic relief or to provide a shocking moment for audiences. However, as society has become more accepting of LGBTQ+ individuals, so too has television and film.
Nowadays, there are a number of television shows and films that feature gay characters and storylines that are both respectful and meaningful. These depictions help to break down stereotypes and educate people about the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals. Here are just a few examples:
1. The Normal Heart
The Normal Heart is a television movie based on the play of the same name by Larry Kramer. It tells the story of the early days of the AIDS crisis in New York City. The movie features a number of gay characters, including Ned Weeks (played by Mark Ruffalo), who is the main protagonist.
2. Glee
Glee is a television show that aired from 2009 to 2015. It featured a large cast of gay and lesbian characters, many of whom were played by out actors and actresses. The show dealt with a number of gay-related issues, such as coming out, bullying, and HIV/AIDS.
3. Brokeback Mountain
Brokeback Mountain is a 2005 film based on the short story of the same name by Annie Proulx. It tells the story of two cowboys who develop a romantic relationship while working together on a ranch in Wyoming. The film was praised for its realistic and sensitive portrayal of gay relationships.
4. Will & Grace
Will & Grace is a television show that aired from 1998 to 2020 pioneered the depiction of gay people as being everyday folks. It featured two gay men in lead roles who were successful, happy and well-adjusted. It was pretty radical for network TV to portray gay people just living their lives without having any internal confusion about being gay.
5. The Wire
The Wire was a gritty TV drama that aired on HBO from 2002 to 2008. It’s hard to believe that such a series could feature one of the most iconic gay superheroes but that’s what Omar was called. Omar’s sexuality was dealt with in a matter-of-fact way. His homosexuality and gentle nature in private were in stark contrast with the typical tough guy image that is often associated with violent criminals.
6. The L Word
The L Word was a Showtime drama that ran from 2004 to 2009. It was the first series to feature nuanced lesbian protagonists. Before the L Word, women kissing women were often used for shock value on screen. to get people talking and to boost ratings. Like Will and Grace, The L Word was committed to portraying the lives of its characters in an authentic way.
7. Star Trek Discovery
Last but by no means least as it’s my favourite show right now, Star Trek: Discovery series has out gay actors Anthony Rapp and Wilson Cruz playing a gay married couple on the ship, holding hands and sharing kisses as folks do. The introduction of non-binary actor Blu del Barrio Ian Alexander who is transgender rounds off this wonderful found family.
These are just a few examples of the many television shows and films that feature gay characters and storylines. By depicting these characters and stories in a respectful and meaningful way, television and film can help to break down the stereotypes that still exist about LGBTQ+ individuals. In addition, they can educate people about the lives of these individuals and help to make them more accepting and understanding. Thank you for watching!
