For Him the Bell Tolls is a comedy episode showcasing the talents of actor Ted Raimi. Joxer is transformed into a handsome hero by Aphrodite during a battle of wills with her son Cupid.
In response to an urgent message from King Lias, Xena leaves Gabrielle and Joxer behind for a few days.
Aphrodite, upset at the match he has made between beautiful Princess Ileandra and dashing Prince Sarpedon, heirs to their fathers’ thrones, kings Lynaeus and Barus, goes to Cupid to complain. According to her, the two kings plan to destroy her temples along their border, so she asks Cupid to break up the impending nuptials.
After Cupid tells her that the couple plans to elope, she is forced to get involved immediately to try to stop the union. Aphrodite boasts that she can use any man as an accomplice simply by casting her lust spell on him, so Cupid dares her to join forces with the bumbling Joxer.
Aphrodite dangles a necklace with a bell on it in front of Joxer and rings the bell softly several times to cast her spell. Joxer is immediately spellbound. Aphrodite instructs him to personally deliver the necklace to Princess Ileandra as a wedding gift.
I know it’s hard to believe, Joxer a hero! It worked for me though. I know many fans believe there’s no place for this Joxer in the Xenaverse as it interferes with the subtext of Gabrielle and Xena’s relationship but, if only The Powers That Be had allowed Joxer the fool to retain a little of the backbone that Joxer the charming had. I wish that the writers would allow Joxer to own up to the fact that he is not the great warrior he pretends to be. It is so obvious to everyone that he isn’t and because of this, instead of finding him funny people find him annoying.
Ted Raimi is a good looking guy I must say. I don’t believe he poses a threat to Xena and Gabby’s relationship so many fans should ease up on him.
Disclaimer: The producers wish to acknowledge the inspiration of Danny Kaye and pay tribute to the classic motion picture “Court Jester”.
