Twitter removes the 140-character limit from Direct Messages

20 August, 2015 by PashaO
Twitter announced the removal of the 140 charcterlimit for direct messages

Twitter recently announced the removal of the 140-character limitation for Direct Messages (DMs). Now you can say more in one message rather than having to spread your private chat over several DMS.

On their blog, Twitter says “this is another big step towards making the private side of Twitter even more powerful and fun.”

This is good news for brands that use Twitter to resolve customer complaints as part of their Customer Service Strategy.

Whilst I sometimes enjoy crafting helpful, polite, succinct responses to customer complaints via DMs, the lifting of the limit is a blessed relief. There are many occasions when the back and forth of DMs is a struggle and you have to take the conversation to email. Now private conversations can be kept to one platform in the hopes of a quick resolution.

Tweets will continue to be the 140 characters short posts, which I must say I’m glad about. Half the fun of tweeting is trying to get your message across in 140 characters. If they increased the characters then it might as well be called Facebook!

The changes have been rolled out across the Android and iOS apps, on twitter.com, TweetDeck, and Twitter for Mac and will continue to roll out worldwide over the next few weeks.
