Is Millie Gibson leaving Doctor Who?

The rumour mill is turning with news that former Coronation Street actress Millie Gibson is leaving Doctor Who.

Gibson joined the Doctor Who cast as the Doctor’s companion alongside the new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa in the Christmas Special titled The Church on Ruby Road. However, recent reports indicate that she will not return for a second season. Showrunner Russell T Davies is said to have written out her character, with an insider claiming, “Millie Gibson has all but left now and there’s a brand new companion, which is really exciting.”

Varada Sethu is reportedly set to replace Gibson, and she has commenced filming with the Doctor Who team in Wales. Sethu has been seen in Doctor Foster, Andor, Jurassic World Dominion, and Now You See Me 2.

Although Gibson has only made one appearance so far as Ruby Tuesday, it’s expected she will have a few more appearances in the upcoming episodes of the 2024 series to wrap up her character’s story arc. She will not, however, be featured in this year’s Christmas special.

Ncuti Gatwa recently posted a photo on Instagram with Gibson on the Doctor Who set, captioning it with a heart emoji, which seems to be a response to the news of her departure.

Gibson previously expressed that joining Doctor Who was “a gift of a role, and a dream come true.” Fans are likely to be surprised by her early exit from the series.

This change comes as Doctor Who prepares for its first series in collaboration with Disney, aiming to expand its international reach and enhance the show with bigger budgets and special effects. Despite the new deal with Disney, UK viewers will still have access to the new and earlier episodes on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Doctor Who fans can look forward to the show’s return in May 2024.
