New Facebook Ask button – now your friends can nag you for information

19 May, 2014 by PashaO

It seems a month can’t go by without Facebook trying to force its members to put their whole life on display. In a bid to outdo itself in the ‘how intrusive can we be’ stakes the social media giant are trialling an “Ask” button which allows you to get all up in your friend’s business.

The new tool pops up next to your friends’ undisclosed relationship statuses, education or work affiliations, basically anything they left blank in their “About” section. If you have always wanted to know where your ‘friend’ went to school or what their relationship status is, you can just blatantly ask.

If you click to ask a message box pops up telling you must tell your friend why you are asking. I don’t know if this is meant to get a conversation going but it just seems really weird. If your buddy decides to answer your stalkerish questions, they can choose to share the response with only you by making that choice in the reply box.

Most of my Facebook profile is left blank as I don’t think the information is relevant to friends and family, who if they really knew me already know this stuff. If anyone of my acquaintances who are also lumped in as friends decides to ask me any of these questions I will try my best to be lady whilst refusing to answer. This is just Facebook\’s way of getting your circle to nag you for answers on the network\’s behalf. Nice try Facebook but at least for me, it\’s not going to work.
