We were warned that Twitter was retiring TweetDeck Air and associated API v1 apps and we were given a brief reprieve but the day has finally arrived.
Twitter\’s Taylor Singletary confirmed the micro-blogging service has pulled the plug on its API v1 and moving on to API v1.1.
\”Today, we are retiring API v1 and fully transitioning to API v1.1. Given the array of blackout tests, blog posts, Tweets and other updates, this should (hopefully) not be a surprise,\” Singletary said in a blog post.
He also thanked developers for their \”cooperation over the last several months.\”
It was announced back in March, that TweetDeck AIR and the iOS and Android apps would be killed off. TweetDeck for Mac and PC will remain for now, and will closely follow the feature updates that will debut on the Web and Chrome versions of the app. Those Web editions will be the primary TweetDeck experience and will get rollouts of new Twitter features and updates first.
The updated API is bad news for third-party Twitter clients, as of v1.1 places a limit on how often third-party Twitter clients and other services are able to access information on Twitter. The updated API will help Twitter reduce the number of spam accounts and bots that use the service. As disappointed as I am to see TweetDeck Air go, the thought of having less spam is an upside and I’m looking forward to.
