If 15 seasons of Supernatural wasn’t enough for you, you’ll be pleased to learn that The CW will be producing a pilot for a prequel series titled, The Winchesters.
The drama is centred on Sam and Dean Winchester’s parents, John and Mary and tells the epic love story of how they met and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love but the entire world.
Supernatural, which ended in 2020 is the longest-running sci-fi series in the history of American broadcast television. It starred Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as brothers Sam and Dean Winchester who save people and hunt things like demons, vampires, werewolves and other supernatural beings. John and Mary were played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead) and Samantha Smith. Mary was killed by a demon when Sam was still a baby. Whilst investigating her death, John becomes a hunter and eventually passes on his knowledge and skills to his sons. John was a recurring character in the first season and died in the Season 2 premiere.
This is the third attempt at a Supernatural spinoff after backdoor pilots Bloodlines aka Supernatural: Tribes in 2014 and Wayward Sisters in 2017 failed to move forward.
Bloodlines originally aired as a backdoor pilot in season 9 and was based on the warring supernatural factions in Chicago. At the centre of it were five rival monster families and a vengeance-seeking hunter.
Wayward Sisters aired as a backdoor pilot in season 13 and was focussed on Sheriff Jody Mills a group of troubled young women, all orphaned by supernatural tragedy. The series was basically about a sisterhood of girls in a foster family with the Sherriff as the helm.
With a pilot in the works, it’s possible that this prequel series will actually take off. The tale of John and Mary Winchester will be told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester voiced by Jenson Ackles.
There is currently no information about the cast.
