Steven Moffat is rumoured to be returning to Doctor Who and writing adventures for the new Time Lord Ncuti Gatwa.
The fandom is split over the news of Moffat’s return, as he definitely had detractors back in the day. From 2010 to 2017, the 61-year-old screenwriter served as showrunner on the BBC One series, having previously written for it under Russell T Davies.
Following his role in reviving Doctor Who after it was cancelled in 1989, Russell is now retaking control of the TARDIS. Russell has requested that his friend Moffat write some episodes for Ncuti’s 15th Doctor series.
Before taking over as showrunner for Doctor Who, Moffat wrote fan favourites such as The Empty Child, Girl in the Fireplace, and Blink – which introduced the Weeping Angels to the series’ collection of monsters. According to the Mirror, Davies reportedly wants Moffat to be part of the series now that the BBC has teamed up with Disney+ to take the show globally.
A source said: “Russell’s on a mission to make Doctor Who great again, event television not to be missed, which is what it was for many years during his and Steven’s tenures in charge of the show. “One of the ways he can do that is to ensure he has the best possible people writing for the programme.
“He has nothing but respect for what Steven achieved with the show and was a fan of his vision as showrunner. He approached him about returning in just a writing capacity because he knows Doctor Who inside out and has a brilliant imagination for adventures in space and time.”
“He took some convincing, but the chance to contribute to a show he has loved since childhood and see it blossom in a new era with a new Doctor was just too much to resist.”
Moffat introduced the world to my favourite Doctor, Matt Smith, as the Eleventh Doctor and his companions, Amy Pond, Rory and River Song. He also gave us Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor and Jenna Coleman as his main companion Clara Oswald.
Moffat also helmed the 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor, which brought together Matt Smith and David Tennant’s Doctors and introduced the late William Hurt as the War Doctor for a multi Time Lord adventure.
