If you are a fan of the Highlander movies or TV series, you know that according to the immortals, “there can be only one”. Deadline has reported that Henry Cavill has set his sights on the title. The Man of Steel actor is in negotiations for a leading role in Lionsgate’s reimagining of Highlander, which will be directed by John Wick’s Chad Stahelski. Kerry Williamson is responsible for crafting the screenplay.
The project is being produced by Neal H. Moritz and Josh Davis, while Amanda Lewis, Patrick Wachsberger, and Gregory Widen are on board as executive producers. Peter Davis, who produced the original film, was also slated to produce before sadly passing away in February.
The 1986 cult classic Highlander featured Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown as ageless beings engaged in a deadly hunt for each other to absorb power. The iconic phrase “There can be only one” emerged from this film, leading to four sequels and three television series – including the beloved USA series starring Adrian Paul.
As for the newest adaptation’s storyline, details remain a mystery – including whether Cavill will portray an entirely new character or someone from earlier iterations. The reboot has been simmering for some time; various prominent names, such as Ryan Reynolds and Justin Lin, have been attached at different stages. However, insiders believe recent developments have pushed the project closer to production.
This opportunity offers Cavill another chance to impress a dedicated fan base after captivating audiences in major productions such as Man of Steel and Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Currently filming Netflix’s The Witcher’s second season following its record-breaking premiere season, Cavill will also reprise his role as Sherlock Holmes in the sequel to Netflix’s Enola Holmes with Millie Bobby Brown returning in the title role.
