Star Trek: Discovery Season 5: A leap into uncharted frontiers

6 December, 2023 by PashaO
Star Trek Discovery final season

The final season of the groundbreaking sci-fi series Star Trek: Discovery is set to beam onto our screens this coming spring, offering a fresh take on the serialised storytelling we’ve come to love. The upcoming season will present a wonderful mix of episodic adventures, standing on the shoulders of the flagship series that breathed new life into the revered franchise.

The end of Star Trek: Discovery’s journey arrives earlier than anticipated by its cast and crew. However, the final ten episodes promise to go out with a bang, echoing the storytelling style of another fan-favourite installment, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (SNW). According to Cinema Blend, showrunner Michelle Paradise and Discovery star Sonequa Martin-Green hinted that the final season will be more episodic, a shift that will resonate with SNW fans.

Speaking at CCXP in Brazil, Paradise shed light on the upcoming season, stating, “Season 5 is going to be a wonderful mix. The DNA of Discovery always has those serialiseds stories over the course of a season. This season, the nature of that serialiseds story allows us to have more episodic adventures. So I think people are really gonna dig it. There are some very cool adventures and some really fun episodes.”

The fifth season will see the crew, led by Michael Burnham, embark on a perilous mission to secure a powerful artefact before it falls into the hands of several ambitious factions. This overarching quest allows for a sense of freedom to narrate more one-off stories revolving around the crew’s interstellar journey.

Fans of Star Trek: Discovery can expect a different vibe from Season 5, as it leans towards a more action-packed, episodic narrative akin to Strange New Worlds. Where Discovery has traditionally focused on a single major adventure with events bleeding into each other, the upcoming season will diverge from this heavily serialised format.

CinemaBlend’s interview with cast member Doug Jones in December 2022 revealed that the series will continue to draw from the strengths of Season 4. Those worried about the series drastically changing its course need not fret. According to Jones, the essence of what fans loved about Discovery will continue to shine in the final season, preserving its core identity.

Despite the excitement surrounding the new episodes, the series’ impending end evokes a sense of regret. Many feel the series had discovered the perfect formula for its approach to storytelling in Season 4 and had the potential to continue for several more seasons. However, we can be grateful that the show has been given the opportunity to craft a fitting final season, one that will hopefully exceed expectations with its episodic instalments.

Star Trek: Discovery’s final season is slated to premiere on Paramount+ in April as part of the 2024 TV schedule. As we bid farewell to this trailblazing series, we look forward to the exploratory missions, interstellar adventures, and narrative novelties the final season promises to bring.
