Silo, formerly known as Wool, is an upcoming dystopian drama series that brings to life the bestselling Silo trilogy by Hugh Howey. It stars Rebecca Ferguson, known for her roles in Dune, The Greatest Showman, and Mission Impossible, alongside Tim Robbins and David Oyelowo.
The plot of Silo is set in a tragic, toxic future where the remnants of humanity live in a giant silo hundreds of stories deep, which is the only way to survive on a planet where the air is poisonous. The survivors are forced to live under strict rules they believe are meant to protect them. However, some rebel against these regulations, daring to hope and dream for a better future. These rebels are deemed dangerous, and the punishment for breaking the rules is severe — they are forced outside to “clean,” a task they won’t survive.
Rebecca Ferguson’s character, Juliette, or Jules, is an independent and hardworking engineer. She lives in the lower levels of the silo, known as the ‘down-deep.’ Jules is assigned to investigate what drove the former sheriff Holston and his wife to volunteer to clean outside, a task that leads to their deaths. Jules soon finds herself assigned to the same fate, unearthing secrets along the way.
Tim Robbins plays the power-hungry Bernard, the head of IT. David Oyelowo takes on the role of Sheriff Holston, who is desperate to discover why his wife voluntarily cleaned the external sensors and died doing so. The cast includes Harriet Walter as Martha, Juliette’s friend and confidante, Rashida Jones as Alison, and Avi Nash as IT expert Lukas.
The series is set to premiere with the first two episodes on 5 May 2023, followed by one new episode weekly, every Friday through 30 June 2023, on Apple TV+. The excitement among sci-fi fans is palpable, with many calling Silo the successor to The Hunger Games.
The Silo series originated from the science fiction novel Wool, the first in the Silo trilogy of books. It was originally self-published as an e-book in 2011 by author Hugh Howey. It became such a hit that it was eventually licensed by Simon and Schuster and became a bestseller.
As we wait for the series to unfold, the anticipation builds. Will the series live up to the high expectations set by the bestselling trilogy? We can only wait and see.
