The Quest: Trailer and premiere date released

3 April, 2022 by PashaO
The Quest Disney trailer

Disney+ has released a new trailer for its upcoming fantasy/reality competition show, The Quest.

The series, which debuts on 11 May on the streaming service, sees eight teens enlist as “Paladins” in a fantasy kingdom. It mixes scripted material with the teens competing and improvising their way through various challenges.

Disney’s official description of The Quest is as follows: “The Quest is a groundbreaking, immersive, hybrid competition series that drops eight real-life teenagers (Paladins) into the fantastic, fictional world of Everealm, where they must save a kingdom by fulfilling an ancient prophecy. Throughout the eight-episode series, these heroes are immersed in a fantasy world come to life, complete with a castle, royals, ethereal fates, all forms of mystical creatures, and a sorceress intent on destruction and power.”

The storyline is fascinating: For thousands of years, Everealm has been a land of unrivalled beauty and powerful magic. Now, the realm is threatened by a powerful evil Sorceress. As a last hope, the noble Fates summon eight strangers known as Paladins from a world beyond to work together to fulfil an ancient prophecy and vanquish the Sorceress. The Paladins must unlock the hero within through a series of challenges that push their limits to restore balance to Everealm. If they fail, all will be lost. Heroes will rise. Kingdoms will fall.

I have to say the production budget looks big for a fantasy role-playing game. The costumes, set design and storyline almost had me sold on the series. It has the makings of a great fantasy adventure. The fact that it’s touted as a reality show – the genre I hate the most above all things – puts me off. But it’s more like the Crystal Maze than RuPaul’s Drag Race, so I might check out an episode to be sure.

The Quest ran on ABC for one season in 2014 but will now feature more interactive elements. The series will be filmed at a castle outside of Vienna, Austria.

The series is executive produced by Mark Ordesky (The Lord of the Rings), Jane Fleming and David Collins, and Michael Williams from Scout Productions and The Amazing Race cocreators Bertram van Munster and Elise Doganieri from New Media Collective.

Rob Eric, chief creative officer at Scout Productions, said, “The Quest is a truly unique unscripted show as it takes contestants into a fully immersive world of magic and fantasy. There is no better partner than Disney+ for this type of enchanted storytelling.”

“We’re doing something magical that has never been done at this level. We’re taking real people and putting them in a fully realised fantasy story, conceived and built by incredible artisans in every department,” said Jane Fleming and Mark Ordesky, executive producers, Court Five. “It’s an immersive, real-life hero’s journey for these eight normal teenagers, who transform before your very eyes. It’s an exciting new form of storytelling.”
