The big blockbuster movie world is still talking about Spider-Man: No Way Home and according to Samuel L Jackson, the film deserves an Oscar.
Despite its success at the Box Office, No Way Home has essentially been snubbed by the Academy according to some. The film has only received a single Oscar nomination for Best VFX. But it’s one of the top favourites in two new fan awards to be announced during the ceremony.
The Academy Awards, the most prestigious film award in the United States, very rarely recognises superhero films. The Dark Knight and Black Panther are rare exceptions to this rule. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has criticised what he perceives as prejudice against superheroes, particularly with No Way Home’s success over the last year.
In addition to Feige’s comments about the voting process, Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield also expressed his disappointment that No Way Home was not nominated for any major awards. Now Samuel L Jackson has weighed in on the conversation.
Samuel L Jackson weighs in on Spider-Man snub
Samuel L Jackson is in London, making a superhero television show called The Secret Invasion. In a recent interview with The Times, Jackson, who played Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, spoke about Spider-Man: No Way Home deserving more awards. “It’ll be nice if more attention is paid to movies that get “asses in seats,” he said.
Jackson is still salty about his own Oscar snub. Despite him being recognised with an Honorary Oscar this year, fans may recall that he received one Oscar nomination for best supporting actor in 1995 for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. “I should have won that one,” said Jackson while discussing the snub with The Times.
“My wife and I went to see ‘Bugsy,’” Samuel L Jackson explained. “Damn! They got nominated, and I didn’t? I guess Black folk usually win for doing despicable sh*t on screen. “So maybe I should have won one. But Oscars don’t move the comma on your cheque — it’s about getting asses in seats, and I’ve done a good job of doing that,” he added.
The Academy Awards were criticised by Jackson for not recognising the movies that keep the film business thriving, and he called on The Academy to establish a real award for “the most popular movie.” Jackson praised Spider-Man: Far From Home for attracting people back to the theatres more than any other movie has done in a long time.
“They should have an Oscar for the most popular movie. Because that’s what the business is about. It did what movies did forever — it got people to a big dark room,” he said.
Jackson said that all movies and genres deserve to be respected and recognised for their own merits. He also pointed out that some actors are more recognised for their work than others.
“All movies are valid. Some go to the cinema to be moved dearly. Some like superheroes. If somebody has more butts on seats it just means your audience is not as broad. There are people who have had successful careers but nobody can recite one line of their parts. I’m the guy who says shit that’s on a T-shirt.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home, which will be released in digital format on 22 March 2022 and 4K UHD and Blu-ray on 12 April 2022.
