BT kicks Yahoo Mail to the curb after hacking claims

30 May, 2013 by PashaO

Just as Sky is moving its customers over to Yahoo! Mail, BT has dumped Yahoo! as email provider to its six million broadband customers following months of customer complaints about hacking.

After decades on Yahoo, BT will be switching its customers over next month to a brand new BT Mail service as part of plans to relaunch BT.Com.

The new website will combine news content, email and billing information accessible via a single login known as a BT ID, and will replace the existing BT Yahoo portal that has been in existence for more than a decade.

The hacking problems that affected BT customers appeared to be repeated around the world. Subscribers to Telecom NZ, which has a similar outsourced email deal, reported similar security breaches. Internet security experts said criminals had used an international network of hijacked computers to mount the attacks on Yahoo!.

This will come as a blow to Yahoo! who recently bought Tumblr for $1.1bn (£723m; 857m euros) and now have their sights set on buying Hulu.

I\’ve only just acknowledged an email from Sky telling me to accept the terms and conditions so that my email accounts can be switched over to Yahoo. Now, I’ll have to shut down the account (knee jerk reaction). Thankfully, it\’s not a critical account.
