Will we ever get a Stargate reboot?

Since Stargate Universe went off the air in 2011 fans of the Stargate franchise have been clamouring for a reboot or a new show, even petitioning for a resolution for the Destiny crew.

We did get a revival of the franchise back in 2017 with Stargate Origins, a 10-episode digital series exploring the life of Catherine Langford. But that wasn’t enough for many fans.

Apparently, show creator Brad Wright has been speaking of a possible Stargate reboot project in development with MGM for quite a while now. In December 2020, Wright suggested that some kind of Stargate project was in the works but that the pandemic had thrown a wrench into the works.

“I know a lot of people are gonna ask about a new Stargate project. And the fact is, I just want everybody to know, MGM and I are working on something,” Wright told GateWorld.

“It’s just too early to talk about. And it’s partly too early because there’s a pandemic going on, and that’s kind of ground things to a halt. But we are working on something that’s very exciting, it’s something that we’ve been talking about for a while now, and I love it.”

Wright went on to explain that the show would happen within the framework of the Stargate SG-1 world.

“I’m excited to have the possibility of making it someday soon, or someday, period. And I’ll say this much, it does exist in the universe that you already know. It’s not a reboot, it’s not a completely new thing, it’s a continuation.”

In April 2021, Stargate SG-1 star Amanda Tapping discussed the potential of a revival show during an interview with The Companion.

“I don’t know. I talked to Brad Wright about it and certainly MGM at one point was very interested. I said to Brad, ‘What do you want me to do on the show?’ And he said, ‘I want you to be in it, and I want you to direct it.’”

Obviously, fans were very excited by Tapping’s comments and the prospect of some favourite characters returning in a new show. This led to Amanda using Twitter to clarify that while there had been interest for a number of years, there was no new series.

In response to the overwhelming reaction to the non existent Stargate series, I have to say once again, there is no series that I know of. There has been interest for a number of years but there is no series. If there is, you’ll be the first to know. 😊

According to Stargate news site Gateworld, an organised group of fans have launched a “365 Days of Stargate” campaign, celebrating the franchise on social media daily in the run-up to SG-1’s 25th anniversary next year. The campaign hopes to gain support from fans worldwide and demonstrate the ongoing interest in Stargate to Amazon by using the hashtag #WeWantStargate.

Let’s hope that Amazon listens and we get a Stargate reboot. I really miss the Stargate universe.
