It’s been a minute since I’ve watched Queen Latifah in anything so I’m excited for her latest film, Girls Trip.
Universal have released a sneak peak of this female-led comedy which stars Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish and is slated for release on 21 July. I expect Universal is hoping this will be a summer blockbuster.
Girls Trip is the first time Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith have appeared in a film together since the 1996 crime drama Set it Off. That reminds me, I leant my Set it Off DVD to a family member years ago and never got it back. Heads will roll!
Anyway, backing it for the men will be Luke Cage star, Mike Colter and Lorenz Tate whose memorable performance as Frankie Lyman in Why Do Fools Fall in Love, still tears me up when I think about it.
The story follows four friends as they embark on a trip to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival, where sisterhoods are rekindled, wild sides are rediscovered, with some romancing, brawling and romancing to make the Big Easy blush.
“Buckle up because I plan on getting white girl wasted, OK.” Mmm sounds like an all-girl version of the hangover but it’s got Queen Latifah in it so I’m in!
Girls Trip is directed by American filmmaker Malcolm D Lee, of The Best Man, Undercover Brother, Roll Bounce, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins, Soul Men, Scary Movie 5, The Best Man Holiday, and Barbershop: The Next Cut. The screenplay is credited to Kenya Barris, Karen McCullah, Tracy Oliver and Erica Rivinoja.
