The worrying trend of liquid inspiration: Balancing creativity and wellbeing

5 June, 2018 by PashaO

As a writer, I constantly find ways to improve my craft, experiment with different techniques, and ensure that my thoughts and ideas are effectively translated on paper. Often, I work diligently during the evenings, perfecting each sentence and sharpening my storytelling abilities. However, over time, I have noticed a concerning pattern emerging in my writing routine that has left me questioning the balance between creativity and wellbeing.

I realised that words and ideas tend to flow more easily when I drink gin during these evening writing sessions. The light buzz from the gin seems to open up my mind and allow ideas to flow freely while minimising writer’s block. Some of my best work takes shape at these moments when I write late into the night.

While the results may be gratifying, I cannot help but worry about relying on alcohol as an essential aid for my creative writing process. Though many great writers of the past may have used various substances to assist during their creative endeavours, it does not necessarily mean that this practice is beneficial or sustainable in the long term.

Relying on drinking as a crutch for creativity raises concerns about physical and mental health implications for other writers experiencing similar habits as me. Alcohol consumption often results in interrupted sleep patterns, which can significantly impact concentration and productivity the following day. Furthermore, developing a dependence on any substance adversely affects one’s wellbeing.

It is crucial to recognise that creativity can flourish without external aids such as alcohol. Finding healthier ways to stimulate artistic expression is better for our overall wellbeing and demonstrates personal growth as a writer. I know there are numerous methods to enhance creativity by practising mindfulness techniques like meditation or engaging in regular exercise – both known for improving mental acuity and reducing stress.

While the temptation of loosening up with gin has led to some fruitful late-night writing sessions, I must stop relying on drinking as the sole means of boosting my creativity. Instead, pursuing healthier avenues and developing a sustainable routine for my wellbeing will ensure I remain productive and successful in my writing endeavours.

As writers, let us strive to balance our passion for creativity and the need to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
