Safeguarding Pokemon Go players: Niantic’s response to the coronavirus pandemic

13 March, 2020 by PashaO
Pokemon Go

The health and safety of Pokemon GO players is a top priority for Niantic, especially in light of the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic. As the virus continues to spread, Niantic has taken several proactive measures to ensure the well-being of its players.

One of the significant changes made by Niantic in response to the coronavirus outbreak is the postponement of the upcoming Abra Community Day event globally. While a replacement date is yet to be announced, this decision reflects Niantic’s commitment to prioritising the health and safety of its players above all else. By deferring the event, Niantic aims to minimise public gatherings and reduce the risk of potential virus transmission among players.

Promoting stay-at-home gameplay

To encourage players to stay indoors and practice social distancing, Niantic has introduced several modifications to the gameplay mechanics of Pokemon GO, as detailed in their official blog post. These changes aim to make the game more accessible and enjoyable for players who are unable or advised against venturing outside during the pandemic.

Incense bundles at discounted rates

Niantic has made a special bundle of 30 incense items available in the in-game store at an incredibly discounted rate of just one PokeCoin. Incense items attract Pokemon to the player’s location, increasing their spawn rate and thereby enhancing the gaming experience. The incense remains active for one hour, providing players with an enjoyable and immersive experience from the comfort of their homes.

Reduced steps for incubators

Incubators, an essential item used to hatch Pokemon eggs based on the number of steps taken by players, have undergone a modification in response to the current situation. Niantic has halved the number of steps required to hatch eggs, making it easier for players to hatch and collect new Pokemon without extensive outdoor activities. This change ensures player safety and encourages engagement with the game from a home environment.

Increased Pokemon habitats and gift drops

To compensate for limited outdoor exploration, Niantic has boosted the frequency of Pokemon habitats closer to player locations. This adjustment allows players to encounter and capture Pokemon without needing to venture far from their homes. Additionally, PokeStops now drop more gifts than usual, enabling players to receive valuable items without travelling to different locations.

Niantic has clarified that these modifications will remain in place until further notice. The company recognises the importance of continuously monitoring the global health situation and adapting gameplay accordingly to safeguard its players.

In a statement to Polygon, Niantic emphasised the need for players to make decisions that prioritise their health and the health of those around them. The company’s proactive approach in implementing these changes highlights its dedication to responsible gaming and community welfare.
