Outlining your novel – Choosing the right path

Starting a novel can be an exciting but daunting challenge. To set your story up for success, outlining your narrative is a crucial step in the writing process. The right outline provides a comprehensive plan of action for your manuscript and helps you maintain focus and motivation from start to finish. In this blog post, we’ll explore how to create an effective outline and choose the most suitable method for you.

Why outlining matters

Outlining your novel ensures that you have a map to guide you through the complex writing journey. It aids in developing credible characters, dynamic subplots, and intriguing world-building. Moreover, it enables you to identify potential narrative issues early on and solve them before they become bigger problems.

Methods of outlining

1. The Snowflake Method – Begin with a central idea or concept and build upon it layer by layer. This approach will gradually increase complexity as you flesh out characters, plot points, and themes.

2. The Three-act Structure – Divide your story into three acts: Setup, Confrontation, and Resolution. Then fill in essential plot points within each section to keep things balanced and cohesive.

3. The Hero’s Journey – Follow the pattern of a classic quest narrative by identifying various stages of your protagonist’s journey, such as the Call to Adventure, Meeting the Mentor, Ordeal, Seizing the Sword, and Resurrection.

4. Scene-by-scene Outline – Create a detailed breakdown of every scene in your novel from beginning to end, including descriptions of the setting, character actions/desires, conflicts, and outcomes.

5. Mind Mapping – Develop spider diagrams to connect plot threads visually from a central point or theme; perfect for exploring intricate relationships among characters and events in different storylines.

Choosing the right outline

Deciding which method to use mainly depends on four factors:

1. Your Writing Style – Choosing an approach that complements your writing style is essential. If you prefer structure, go for something comprehensive like scene-by-scene; if you value flexibility, try a more open-ended method like mind mapping.

2. Genre – Different storytelling methods work better with specific genres. For instance, the Hero’s Journey is suitable for adventure or fantasy stories, while a scene-by-scene outline may be ideal for mystery or thriller novels.

3. Experience Level – Novelists with years of experience may gravitate toward more detailed outlines, while new writers might find their footing with less rigid structures.

4. Personal Preference – Ultimately, the best outline is the one that works for YOU. Experimentation will reveal which methods inspire and energize your writing process.

Outlining your novel is an essential practice that can help you save time, maintain momentum, and keep you focused throughout the writing journey. There are various outlining methods to explore. Finding the one that suits your style best will lay a solid foundation for your story’s success. Don’t be afraid to experiment – embrace the possibilities and give your novel the direction it deserves.
