The Game of Thrones series has finally ended, and I, for one, am happy about that. It’s not often that a show that I love ends on its own terms, even as fans disagree with the terms. I’m used to my faves being cancelled with no closure or jumping the shark so badly that I can’t continue to watch. At least Game of Thrones wrapped up the story it set out to tell, kind of, sort of. Whether or not fans are satisfied with the conclusion is a whole different conversation.
Sansa went from longing to be the Queen of the South to wanting to protect her home in the North. Once she returned to the North and endured all she did at Ramsey Bolton’s hands and returned to Winterfell with Jon, she wanted to be the Queen of the North. Even more so when she learned Jon’s secret, she would have done to Jon what she did with bran, asking that the north stay separate. She finally got her wish.
I’m not shocked at Dany’s demise, but I know a lot of fans are outraged.
For all those who say the show wasted ten years of your life, remove your rose-tinted glasses and go back and rewatch it from season one. Look at all the times Dany burned people and ask yourself, was there another way she could have dealt with the situation? Did she enjoy the burning a little too much? Or not. She was always going to be the mad Queen. Look at her family history. You can chalk it up to life and move on.
After a long and winding journey, many plot threads set up early on in the series failed to reach satisfying conclusions.
For example, Jon Snow’s true parentage mystery was teased for years. Still, it lacked any real impact or resolution when the finale finally came. Despite the numerous references to Jon being a Targaryen, it didn’t matter in the end. Dany didn’t seem to care. She didn’t see Jon as much of a threat. No one cared. Bran ultimately called Jon the “true heir” of the Iron Throne before sitting on it himself—albeit metaphorically, as Drogon had melted it to the ground.
While Jon was ultimately given the freedom to go back beyond The Wall and join his Wildling friends, it felt like a hollow victory. This was a storyline that millions of viewers had invested in, but ultimately, it led nowhere.
It’s a shame that a series as epic as Game of Thrones had to end on such a lacklustre note. While some loose ends are to be expected, this ending was too abrupt and unsatisfying. It should have been spread over at least two episodes.
All in all, Arya had the best ending of all the characters. Oh, and Bron, who finally got his castle. With series finally wrapping up, Kit Harrington can now cut his hair.
