Flogging a dead blog

13 June, 2013 by PashaO
Blogging tips

A long time ago

Once upon a time, long before Twitter and Facebook, I was an avid blogger, writing about my favourite TV shows, writing fan fiction and creating PC wallpapers from screencaps. I was very active in the Xena, Hercules, Buffy and Stargate fandoms (Wow. Check out the way back machine). Then I got hacked, got demoralised and let things go.

I allowed the domain to expire, giving no fraks about the future. Then one day I had a notion to start up again and got myself a shiny new domain. I tried to recreate the site from an old backup but the passion was never the same. A lot of work had been lost along with all the connections I had spent 10 years making. But enough with the pity party!

Hero to Zero

I’ve decided to actively start blogging and reviewing again. After six years of writing web copy in Plain English for our corporate website, I figure it’s time to write in a different style. To enjoy doing this, I need readers and feedback: I need love peoples.

As it stands this blog has no legs, no love, no link juice and very little readership. I’m effectively starting from nothing.

In order to motivate myself, I have decided to mount a campaign because where I work everything is either a campaign or a project.

Project dead blog revival

rising-from-grave

Have you ever been email spammed by people promising to get your site ranking on page one of Google? We get these offers all the time at work and I’m not allowed to tell them to frak off! Our site ranks high naturally because of who we are. Even if it didn’t our customers (read captives), know who we are and where to find us as it’s written on all our paper publications.

There are people who pay hundreds of pounds to get their sites ranking on page one of Google. I’ve decided to see if I can get a few pages from this site ranking on say, page two with just some elbow grease (hard work for the uninformed). Like a zombie from the Walking Dead, this blog will rise again! Gauntlet thrown down, challenge accepted.

Project objectives

I’m giving myself six months (until Christmas) to raise the profile of this blog. So what will I measure? I must have measurable objectives otherwise how will I know if I’m winning or not.

Like I said this blog has no love, it’s not ranked on Alexa and as for Google page rank, forget about it! The Big G doesn’t even know this blog exists.

So here are my goals:

  • Increase the number of visitors to the site from 10 per week to 100
  • Get an Alexa traffic rank of something other than Unranked
  • Get a Google page rank of 1 (better than 0)
  • Increase backlinks from 1 to 5
  • Increase Twitter followers from 59 to 150
  • Increase Klout score from 36 to 50

You may say the bar is set low but I have a full-time job people. The last blog had 10 years to grow before it was hacked down in its prime. I think six months might prove challenging, which translates to exciting.

As part of this project, I will blog about my experiences and share any useful tips I may glean. Hopefully, my experiences can help anyone who is starting a new blog or like me, breathing life into an old one.

So the boxing gloves are on, let the games begin.
